Bloodhounds and Search and Rescue

Bloodhounds and Search and Rescue

For some of you who have visited our website, >>> Davidson Kennels <<< you know that we raise Bloodhounds for Search and Rescue and for Family Pets.
Here are some interesting facts about the Bloodhound that you may or may not know:
( from Wikipedia)

The Bloodhound (also known as the St. Hubert hound and Sleuth Hound) is a large breed of dog that was bred originally to hunt deer and wild boar, later specifically to track human beings by scent. It is famed for its ability to follow scents hours or even days old over great distances. Its extraordinarily keen nose is combined with a strong and tenacious tracking instinct, producing the ideal scent hound, and it is used by police and law enforcement all over the world to track escaped prisoners, missing people, and even lost pets.  To read more about the bloodhound...>>> CLICK HERE <<<

If you are interested in a Bloodhound for Search and Rescue, or a pup for your family, please give us a call so we may get you on our list of individuals who have already come our way.  As of to date, we have 7 of our dogs in the field either in training or on-the-job for Search and Rescue.  We have pups right now ready to go to the cause but will not have anymore until late spring.

They love what they do and each one of them feels very special when ever they are on the job training.  They love to have a purpose.

Here is a recent pic of Detective Lacey in Training in a facility about 2 1/2 hours north of where we are located.  She has a great sense of accomplishment when working.

Please visit our website to see recent pics of our family or just give us a call.

We will be happy to answer any questions you might have about our pups.

Bloodhound Puppies - Special Things to Know

Now that you have your new Bloodhound Puppy, they all require special things for them to grow up to be a mature healthy dog. Other than the obvious things such as food, water, and shelter, they also require a great deal of attention and love.
Pet owners will sometimes make the mistake of over-feeding their new pup out of love but that is and could be very detrimental to the pup's health. Be sure to read all you can about your new Bloodhound Puppy and talk with your vet to see how much and what you should be feeding. Over-feeding will result in overgrowth in certain areas and not in others. You want your pup to have their little.....

Toys for Your Bloodhound

Toys for Your Bloodhound

A great deal of thought should be given when choosing the right toys for your bloodhound. You must first learn about the breed and understand their mannerisms before going out to the store and buying just any old thing.
By nature, if a Bloodhound doesn't have a lot to keep their minds occupied, they are just like any other animal on the planet, they get bored. Many new dog owners will spend a great deal of money spoiling their new pet by going to their local pet store or by ordering online all kinds of toys which they think will be enjoyable to the dog.

Training your Bloodhound Puppies

Training your Bloodhound puppies can be very challenging at first but also very rewarding later. Although the Bloodhound has a mind of his own and once the nose takes over, it won't matter what you do to get his attention, the ears and the eyes stop working and the nose is working the brain to the fullest.
Once you have read up on the behavior of the Bloodhound, and you have decided to get one as a pet, a working, or show dog, remember this...the earlier you start training them the better. I recommend......

Included in earlier posts are books that are recommended reading for all who own Canines.  First aid is a big one!  You never know when an emergency will happen so being prepared is key!  Take a look on the earlier posts for these books and pick them up.  AMAZON usually has any book for about the best price money can buy...stay tuned for the progress reports.

First Aid For Dogs and Cats

Unexpected injuries occur all the time and without the proper treatment, a loved one in your family could become very ill or even die if not treated properly and in good response time.  A first aid kit at home and in your car could mean the difference of good treatment or no treatment.  Of course, if you don't know how to treat an emergency or injury, it won't matter one way or the other.

That's why owners should educate themselves on what to do in case something like this happens.

O.K.  Now we have found the ultimate book in First Aid for your dogs and cats.
The title is "The First Aid Companion for Dogs and Cats" by Amy D. Shojai.

We purchased this book a while back and it is one of the best resources for the home.  This covers everything from basic first aid to CPR.  In the event of an emergency or accident, this is a must have for any dog or cat owner.  It can be purchased through Amazon >>> HERE or do a search for the title online.
For less than $20, you could help treat your dog or cat and possibly save their life.  Pretty inexpensive price to pay for a loving animal...wouldn't you say?

Just One Colorado Bloodhound

Within about the next 4- 5 weeks, Honey (Pictured left) is about to have puppies. She has a fantastic background with names like Bitterroot, Jesse James, Legacies, Brighton, Coshelav. Her sire was Bitterroots Big Bear Grizz. Her Dam, Pollyana was from Haxtons, Blue Bottom and others.

Honey and Rocco, (which has a great line of 47 confirmation champions in a 5 generation pedigree) will become parents in about 4-5 weeks.

Rocco has a fantastic line behind him with names like Ramsey Creek, Legacy, Rectory's (import) Brighton, Mountaineers from his fathers side, and his mother with names from Shericks, Kamilots (import) and Nimrod (import).

They will produce some fantastic pups with great history and pedigree behind them.

We are welcoming her little ones and can't wait to play!

Stay tuned for more updates as they become available.

Harley Had a Bath

One never realizes how big one is until you have to put one in the bathtub!
Just finished giving Harley a bath.
If you all recall, Harley was just a small pup 7 months ago, easy to handle, pick up and put into the tub. When summer was here it was easy to give him a bath outside, just hook up the hose and go.
It's been about a month since his last bath and he has really gained weight! (Either that or I'm becoming a woos!)

Gave him a bath, tried to dry him off, and I got to say..."Ain't nothin funnier than a Bloodhound shakin himself off...skins a flappin... and the slobbers a slingin!

After the bath it was time to give him a blow dry with a hand held hair dryer. Brushed him out, sprayed him down, and he still has slobber slingin!

While I am writing this, he thought he would learn how to type...Deb took a pic of him watching me at my desk.>>>>

He ain't lil no more mom!

Meanwhile, here in Colorado it has been bitter cold...-28 the other night. All the hounds were glad to come in and stay the night. We put them in anyway at night only this night they came in before dark.

Stay up with us as we will have more news soon... cause Harley is goin to the show again!

The Ride After New Year

HANNAH IS TIRED

It's the 2nd day of the New Year and Hannah and I took a ride and a walk. I don't know who was more tired...me or her.

She likes riding in the back seat of the pickup (where the pic is taken) and upon occasion, in the front....not the passenger seat but in my lap! (Makes it hard to drive straight)

Everyone in doing good. Honey is having a sleepover for a few weeks at Rocko's house and maybe, just maybe, she will become a first time mom in a few months.

I'll keep you posted as things develop. More to Come!
